In a stunning upset, three-armed boy Timmy Johnson won the annual spelling bee championship yesterday. Timmy, who was born with a third arm protruding from his chest, defeated reigning champ Jimmy Nguyen in the final round, correctly spelling the word “pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.”
“I’m just so happy right now,” said Timmy, who was immediately mobbed by his cheering parents and friends. “I can’t believe I won!”

Jimmy, who was visibly shaken by the loss, shook Timmy’s third hand and congratulated him on a hard-fought competition. “He deserved it,” Jimmy said. “He’s a great speller.”

This is the first time in the history of the spelling bee that a three-armed contestant has won. Last year a four-armed boy named Billy Johnson made it to the final round, but misspelled “Winner” as “Winnter” and was eliminated.
